By the year 2040, women veterans are projected to make up 40% of the military force – a massive increase compared to 2000 when women only accounted for 4%. Trying to prove women-specific service connected conditions to the VA can be a difficult and frustrating process. Women veterans can experience a unique set of challenges compared to their male counterparts when it comes to proving these certain conditions, along with traumatic abuses such as military sexual assault that statistically affect more women than men.
These stressors, coupled with common mental health conditions veterans face and a long list of physical demands that can impact the body, can lead to a need for greater support.
We've compiled a list of women-specific veteran organizations that help women with unique needs and experiences. Whether you need employment support or the warmth of a caring community, these 8 organizations help with a range of different things:
Foundation for Women Warriors
- The Foundation for Women Warriors is an organization supporting women veterans and their children through a variety of different programs that support personal and economic wellbeing, along with the transition from military to civilian life.
The VA's Center for Women Veterans (CWV)
- The VA's Center for Women Veterans (CWV for short) helps women veterans access various VA benefits, services, and opportunities regarding education and collaboration. This includes service-connected disability compensation, along with other VA benefits such as home loans, education, and career services.
Operation We Are Here
- Serving all veterans, Operation We Are Here provides resources for military communities and their families. They also have a specific page dedicated to women veterans, where you can find a list of other helpful organizations and resources.
Women Veterans Interactive
- Women Veterans Interactive works to provide women veterans with valuable resources to address common issues that often go overlooked – such as mental, physical, emotional, and financial challenges that women veterans face. Their programs are trauma-informed and women-centric to support the long-term well being of women veterans.
WoVeN Women Vets
- WoVen, a women veterans network, provides a social network and community of women networks to build relationships across the nation. The goal is to build connections and support one another through all stages, with women coming together from all backgrounds.
