Pick up a paintbrush or some colored pencils – art therapy has been proven to help bust stress and boost your mental health. Many veterans experience different mental and physical health problems as a result of their time serving in the military. The physical demands placed on the body during service can lead to injuries, which can also worsen mental health problems. Specifically, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD for short) affects around 7% of veterans at some point in their life. While PTSD is commonly known as a mental health condition, it can also worsen physical health conditions.

So, what is art therapy, and how can it help something as complex as PTSD? Let's talk about it:

What is art therapy?

The definition of art therapy is quite simple: "The use of artistic methods to treat psychological disorders and enhance mental health", according to VeryWell Mind. The usage of creativity through artistic mediums can promote healing from mental health conditions and also a general improved sense of well being. Art therapy can take many forms, but the following artistic activities are the most commonly used:

  • Coloring

  • Drawing

  • Painting

  • Sculpting

  • Photography

You don't have to be Picasso to enjoy the benefits of art therapy, either. Research has proven that art therapy can have a positive impact and soothe symptoms of mental health conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, stress, and even relationship problems. Not to mention, it's also an enjoyable way to spend time.

How can art therapy help PTSD?

Several studies, including this one, have examined the relationship between traumatized adults and the implementation of art therapy. Researchers found that participants of art therapy who had been dealing with PTSD symptoms were able to significantly reduce their trauma symptoms and also depression symptoms.

Art therapy is a form of mindfulness, which is simply the practice of staying in the present moment. This state of focus can bring us better concentration, better sleep, pain relief, and reduced stress levels. So whether you make something out of a piece of clay or try your best at meditation, you'll benefit from being mindful even just a little bit each day.

How can veterans participate in art therapy?

Depending on where you're located, opportunities to participate in art therapy will vary. Operation We Are Here has compiled a great list of resources for veterans interested in art therapy across the country – check it out here.
