We love helping veterans virtually with a variety of different VA disability benefit claim-related services, but there are certain advantages that an in-person evaluation for a Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) can bring. But how do you know when you should come in-person versus online, and what difference does it make anyway?
We'll clear that up in this blog and go over a few specific conditions that cannot be evaluated with a virtual DBQ. Here's how in-person visits can help, and which conditions require them:
How in-person visits can help
First things first: A DBQ is a VA form that helps the rater assign the correct disability percentage. It is helpful in filing a fully developed claim and potentially bypassing the need for a C&P exam. While many conditions can be evaluated virtually, some can't due to key rating pieces that cannot be evaluated virtually.
For example, with orthopedic conditions: Range of motion (ROM) is how the VA rates most orthopedic conditions.
Orthopedic conditions are typically measured with a goniometer, which records the degree of which joints to move. Most primary care providers don’t utilize this tool while evaluating your pain so it is not typically part of your medical records. It is commonly used by orthopedic specialists and physical therapists. Current measurements (within a year from filing the claim) is best as it shows the current severity of the condition.
The following types of conditions must be evaluated in-person:
Orthopedic conditions
Specialized conditions
Heart conditions
Neurological conditions
Skin conditions
We have an in-person clinic at MRPY
We have partnered with a clinic in Florida with experienced providers on staff to complete evaluations and DBQ’s. They have completed thousands of DBQ’s, are veterans, and understand the VA rating criteria. Check out our website here for more information.
